It’s almost time to celebrate like only Capetonians can do. The Cape Town Carnival sets off in high-kicking style on 17 March 2018. This festive event is a true celebration of all that’s right with the world and this year the emphasis is on sustainability.
Powered by creativity and joie de vivre, the carnival is 2km procession of show-stopping exuberance along Green Point’s Fan Walk. However, there’s an authentic purpose behind all the glitz and glamour.
Cape Town Carnival is a collaboration between artists from all walks of life, to show off just how transformative creativity can be in united people behind a common purpose. This year’s event is expected to feature over 1500 people and 43 performing groups from diverse backgrounds.
The carnival is operated by a non-profit trust and creates employment to the tune of 1000 jobs. In the process the event builds cooperation in the local community, who all work together to pull off this world-class event.
This year the focus is on highlighting the natural gifts of Cape Town. It is a celebration of the city’s abundant beauty, precious resources and colourful array of cultures.
With the city clasped in the grip of a devastating drought, the Carnival is an opportunity for the city folk to rally together with their characteristic can-do attitude. In Cape Town, the show must go on!
There is also plenty of reason to celebrate. The Carnival is instrumental in introducing the less fortunate to the arts and providing training for them in valuable areas. These include set design, costume creation and event management.
As far as possible, the floats are re-used every year and the costumes and design elements are created from eco-friendly, recycled or recyclable materials.
Support this worthy initiative in bringing an appreciation of nature’s bounty to the people. Join the throngs along Fan Walk as they dip into the Carnival Villages lining the street. Here you will find a feast of song, dance and good things to eat and drink.
If you are coming from out of town, book your accommodation now. It’s going to be a long night of celebrations.
