Indulge in a flight of fantasy when you take a trip to the purple palace in Bree Street this September. Cathy Specific and her co-stars Molly and Holly will be waiting to greet you and whisk you off on a whirlwind tour of great humour, good food and grand old times at Gate69.
Cathy specific is the invention and alter ego of Pretoria-born cabaret star Brendan van Rhyn and Gate69 is the culmination of years of planning, plotting and scheming on his behalf. His wishes have finally come to fruition (with a little help from his friends, Christopher Dudgeon and Luanna Shonfield) in the form of this luxurious Moulin Rouge inspired 80-seater dinner theatre, which adds another gorgeous touch of grace and elegance to the Cape Town theatre scene. Gate69 joins Zip-Zap Circus, The Fugard Theatre, and Alexander Bar, Café and Theatre as the top inner city attractions for theater lovers.
Ideally located in the heart of the Mother City’s night life and perfectly decked out to bring the joys of cabaret to Cape Town, Gate69 sports a fabulously dressed entrance foyer and bar for the use of patrons – as well as passers-by, from noon to 01h30 daily. This over-the-top venue is also available to hire for corporate functions and private do’s.
This prestigious establishment opened on 15 September 2016 with VRG-Theatrical’s production of the iconic rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Now it’s the turn of Cathy and her Trolley Dollies who will be packing in the crowds until October. Tickets start from R450-R595 per person and the show begins at 18h30 from Wednesdays to Saturdays.
If you are lucky enough to snag a ticket to one of these performances, you are in for a treat. Ms Specific herself will greet you at the edge of the red carpet with a continental kiss on the cheek and usher you into her fold.
Dinner is served an hour before take-off when the dollies take to the stage and consists of tiered mezze platters overflowing with wholesome finger food. Afterwards there’s alcoholic ice cream for dessert and a chance to meet the ‘ladies’ as they descend from the crowd to mingle with their adoring public.
The show itself is cabaret perfection with dollops of humour and good-natured fun. Hits like Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’ and Tina Turner’s ‘Proud Mary’ add to the sing-a-long foot-tapping enjoyment. If you’ve ever wondered what cabin attendants get up to behind the scenes, now’s your chance to find out.
Get your tickets online, book your accommodation, dress up to the nine’s (or prepare to be the object of Specific’s tongue lashing), and join Cathy and the Trolley Dollies for an unforgettable evening of entertainment.
